Here are two of the oldest and largest timber frame barns in the world. Barley barn circa. 1220 and Wheat barn circa. 1280.

In the introduction to Buildings of England: Essex, Pevsner states that Essex is not famous for its grand country houses, rather what is more interesting are its large barns.
